    Genealogy Research and Military Records

How can Military Records assist you in your genealogy research?

Nearly every generation has known war, which means if you are involved in researching your genealogical history, at least one of your ancestors was likely in the military.  If this is the case, you will not want to overlook searching for military records in your genealogical research.

These records often provide an abundance of valuable information about our ancestors.  Things such as:

    1.      Compiled Service Records can provide you with information about your ancestor like: their rank, their unit, the date they were mustered in and out, their basic biographical information, medical data, and information about their time in the military.

    2.      Pension Applications and Pension Payment Record Files will give you information regarding any pension payments for veterans, their widows, their children, and other heirs.  These files often include supporting documents like marriage certificates, birth records, death certificates, family letters, discharge papers, and more.

    3.      Bounty Land Warrant Applications Files related to claims based on wartime service from 1775 to early March 1855.  If your ancestor served in the Revolutionary War, War of 1812, early Indian Wars, or the Mexican Wars, a search of these records could prove invaluable and give you information similar to those you’d find in pension files.

    4.      Military Service Records are primarily available through the National Archives and the National Personnel Records Center (NPRC).  While they contain valuable data, because of a fire in 1973, many of the records of military personnel discharged between 1912 and 1964 were destroyed, but which files will depend on the specific branch of service and even the name of your ancestor, so don’t rule it out.

    5.      Draft Registration Records of men born between 1873 and 1900 may be an excellent source for information if they were registered in one of the three World War I drafts.  The cards contain data such as name, birth date and place, occupation, dependents, nearest relative, physical description, and country of allegiance of an alien.

    Where do you begin?

Unfortunately, there is not an easy answer.  You will want to begin online first and save the footwork for any information you are not able to find through the Internet for later.  Even on the Internet, this can take a great deal of time because you have to search through a variety of resources.  Finding compiled military records, for example, you will want to start with the national archives microfilm.  If they have not been reproduced on microfilm, you can take your search to the National Archives Building in Washington, DC, and ask for the original records.

Each type of military record may or may not be able to be located online, and to find out if your ancestors are able to be reached through searching the Internet, you may spend a lot of time heading down dead ends.  The Internet CAN prove to be a valuable tool in finding lost military records, but it cannot be the only tool.

To begin your online search, be sure you have as much information about your ancestor as possible.  Everything from name, to social security number, to date of birth, to residential information will come in handy.  Once you are sure you are not able to locate any other identifying information, check out our comparison of online investigative services to narrow down the ones that will give you the information you want.  This can save you a lot of otherwise wasted time, as you can search for a variety of records at once – instead of being forced to search all over the Internet.

Military Records will give you a plethora of information on your ancestors.  Take your time and investigate every lead, and you will be surprised at how much you learn about your history!

    Good luck!
